We had a great weekend out at Bert Adams Scout Camp for our Trailblazer Adventure Camp this past weekend. I’d like to thank everyone who attended and helped make it a success. We had nearly a thousand cub scouts from all over the Atlanta Area Council come out and participate with us. With all the different program areas available, it sounds like they all had a great time thanks to your help! I’d like to give a special shout out to Daniel Ripley and Robert ‘Scorpio’ Carlin who not only helped run the event during the day for the cub scouts, but also helped act as servers for all the OA meals. Good job you two!
As many of you already know, our current Chapter chief Avery has been elected as the Vice Chief of Inductions for the Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge and as such, must step down as Chapter Chief at the end of his term in accordance with the Lodge’s operating procedures. We have held our elections and I’d like to congratulate Robert ‘Scorpio’ Carlin on being elected as the next Kennesaw Chapter Chief and Miguel Vila on becoming the next Chapter Vice Chief. Congratulations to both of you, we know the chapter is in good hands going forward and look forward to you being sworn in at the December OA Banquet.
There’s been a lot of changes this year for unit elections so even though they’re still several months away, check out the new eligibility requirements. These were updated on May 23, 2018 and take effect beginning February 1, 2019.
- Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
- Have experienced 15 nights of camping while registered with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement; the balance of the camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at most, three nights each. Ship nights may be counted as camping for Sea Scouts.
- At the time of their election, youth must be under the age of 21, hold the Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery Award, or the Sea Scout Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Sea Scout Skipper, be elected by the youth members of their unit.
- Adults (age 21 or older) who meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to and approval by the lodge adult selection committee.
The Order of the Arrow is all about cheerful service to others. We strive to make the community a better place by doing our part and we have fun doing it! You can see a lot pictures about what we’ve done so far on our Scrapbook page. Also, be sure to check our the rest our site to learn about exclusive High Adventure opportunities open only to members of the OA as well as other info about the great programs the OA has to offer. You can also watch the below video about some of the fun we’ve been having just this past year!
What does this mean for the scout?
What all this means is, if you are registered in a Venture Crew, meet the requirements, and your crew chooses to hold an election this year, you can be on that ballot! If you are also registered ad meet the requirements for another BSA Unit, example, a Troop, you could potentially be on that ballot as well!
What does this mean for the unit leader?
For the unit leader, this does add a layer of complication. Until now, elections only took place in BSA Troops. Many troops track ranks and more importantly nights camping via ScoutBook or Troopmaster meaning they can run a “OA Eligibility” report to find out who in their unit meets the requirements to be on the ballot. However many Crews and Ships don’t currently track nights camping. Because nights camping will now count across ALL BSA units for a scout, we need to take that into account when reviewing these reports or when manually reviewing nights camping if the participant is in a Crew or Ship. Potential solutions to make the problem easier:
- For Troops, the solution is quite easily remedied. Scouts who are registered in a Troop and a Crew can request that there Crew nights camping be entered into ScoutBook/Troopmaster by their Troop Advancement Coordinator. This would need to be done going back 2 years as well as going forwards.
- For Crews, if your Crew currently uses the Venture Crew Module of Scoutbook, nights camping can be added there. Similarly to Troops, scouts in Crews can request that their Troop nights camping be added. If your Crew is manually tabulating nights camping, be sure to request scouts to turn in a printout of total nights camping with their Troops
You can see the full timeline for the 2019 OA Election year HERE, but the most important dates to know are:
- Jan 1, 2019 – Unit Elections start in BSA Troops ONLY
- Feb 1, 2019 – Unit Elections start for BSA Crews & Ships
- March 31, 2019 – Absolutely last day to hold Unit Elections
We will continue making announcements during District Roundtable Meetings. This is the best time to ask questions as the OA Kennesaw Chapter holds our monthly meeting during the breakouts. Our next meeting is Oct 4, 2018. We will also be sending emails to Troop and Crew contacts per last year’s recharter information.
In the meantime, if you have questions about the OA or elections, feel free to contact the Chapter Advisor using the below form.

Calling all Kennesaw Chapter Ordeal Members!!!
Has it been at least 10 months since you went through your induction weekend with the Egwa Tawa Dee Lodge? If so it is time to take the next step to engage with your Chapter & Lodge and take your next step in becoming a Brotherhood member of the OA.
Don’t worry, the process is much easier than the induction! We promise. You can go through the Brotherhood Trail any most Lodge events and it only take one evening to complete it.
The lodge events coming up where you can complete this are: http://www.aacegwa.org/calendar.htm
- Spring Gathering @ Bert Adams – March 9-11
- Induction Weekend @ Woodruff – May 4-6
- Induction Weekend @ Bert Adams – May 18-20
You do need to be an “Active” member to go through Brotherhood which means dues paid. Watch the quick video here to see how easy it is to log in online to get current and then join your Chapter as a Brotherhood member. https://youtu.be/ptJj8DOKB4A
We also need all levels of members to come to Spring Gathering to help run a game for the Cub Scouts in Foothills that will be camping for Weblos Woods the same weekend at Bert Adams as the Spring Gathering. Please register with the lodge today http://www.aacegwa.org/calendar.htm to come out and support your District, Chapter, & Lodge.

Unit Elections are just around the corner and we need everyone’s help with running quality elections. We will have troop election training on Friday, December 1st at Transfiguration Catholic Church in the Family Life Center. Troop Advisors and Troop Representatives need to attend and ScoutMasters are also invited.
We hope that more members will be able to join us for the next meeting on November 2nd. Chapter & Lodge Calendars can be found on our website www.oakennesaw.com
OA Trailblazer will be held on October 6-8th at Bert Adams. At this campout OA members serve as staff to help teach cub scouts. It is a great way to give back to those who are coming behind us and to serve as good role models for the younger scouts. The cost is $15 and all food is provided. The Lodge really needs both youth & adults to step up and help staff this event. This is a major fundraiser for the Lodge and is how we are able to continue to donate to the Atlanta Area Council’s Campership fund.
On October 14th & 21st we will have a Lodge Day of Service. Details can be found on the Egwa Tawa Dee Website. http://www.aacegwa.org/calendar.htm
OA Fall Ordeal will be held November 3rd -5th at Bert Adams. This is the last weekend of the year for candidates to go through their ordeal to become a brother. We are in need of Elangomats. Please keep in mind how appreciative you were to the Elangomat that served at your ordeal and please consider helping out. If it has been at least 10 months since your ordeal you can also earn your brotherhood at the same time as serving as an Elangomat. The cost is $15 and all food is provided. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to serve an an Elangomat.
If your fellow OA members in your troop (or parents of members) are not receiving this email, please forward it to them and direct them to www.oakennesaw.com to signup for all Chapter emails.
